Radiotelemetric Evaluation of the Effect of Horticultural Practices on Pine and Meadow Voles in Apple Orchards: Ii. Herbicide Application
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum) and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were studied in a commercial apple orchard in the Hudson Valley of New York during April and May 1981. Selected voles were given miniature radiotransmitters and then tracked before and after herbicide application. A total of eight pine and meadow voles were tracked throughout the experimental period. H0m.e range size decreased on the day following herbicide application but showed an increase from day 1 to day 5 & 7 after application. Movements away from the tree line into the aisles did not change significantly after herbicide use. We conclude that if herbicide is to have a significant impact on vole management in orchards, it must be used regularly in conjunction with other cultural practices.

Radiotelemetric Evaluation of the Effect of Horticultural Practices on Pine and Meadow Voles in Apple Orchards: Iii. Use of Orchard Border Habitats by Meadow Voles
A study was undertaken to determine if meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, use habitats adjacent to apple orchards. Considerations were given to how extensively these areas were used, if at all, and if a bulldozed strip would control their movements between the orchard and adjacent border habitats. Trapping and telemetry data showed that meadow voles do use the adjacent border habitats exten...
متن کاملBait Stations for Controlling Voles in Apple Orchards
Bait stations made with polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipe were compared with hand-broadcast applications of rodenticides for achieving long-term control of pine and meadow vole populations (Microtus pinetorum and M. pennsylvanicus, respectively) in two apple orchards in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York. The stations were constructed of three pieces of 1.5-in diameter PVC tubing joined together in t...
متن کاملEconomics and Control of Damage Caused by Low-density Populations of Meadow Voles in Ontario Apple Orchards
Live trapping and questionnaires were used to evaluate amount, distribution, and costs of control of damage to Ontario apple trees by meadow voles (Microtus enns lvanicus) in 1981-82. In a sample of 180 orchards, 5802 (0. trees were damaged or killed by voles. Orchards with high levels of damage (> 2.5%) were smaller than the average orchard in our sample. Application of rodenticides showed no ...
متن کاملLong Term Vole Control in Ontario Apple Orchards
'!he results obtained so far in this 3 year study have shown that the plots with poisoned bait feeder stations suffered significantly less tree girdling than the plots treated with the fall broadcast application of 2% zinc phosphide. Similar timings were also observed in number of voles per plot, however, the vole population was much lower than the previous year. Cbnsiderable interest has been ...
متن کاملEvaluation the Preharvest Application of Iron and Nitrogen on Some Qualitative Characteristics of Two Apple Cultivars during Cold Storage
Apple is one of the most important fruits in temperate zones with a long post-harvest life during cold storage. A factorial experiment, in a randomized completely block design was used to investigate the preharvest application of Iron (0, 500 and 1000 mg Fe-EDDHA per tree) and nitrogen (0, 48 and 96 g ammonium nitrate per tree( on some postharvest qualitative characteristics in "Red spur" and "...
